Kaliaganj case: Calcutta High Court forms SIT to probe minor girl’s murder

Calcutta High Court on Thursday formed a three member Special Investigation Team (SIT), including former CBI additional director Upen Biiswas to probe alleged murder of a minor girl in Malda’s Kaliaganj. Major violence had erupted over the girl’s death, leading to incidents of violence where Kaliaganj police station was attacked.

The court said that the SIT will submit its primary report on June 28, on the date of next hearing.

The three-member SIT comprises former CBI additional director Upen Biiswas, IPS Damayanti Sen and former Inspector General of Police (Bengal) Pankaj Datta.

Justice Rajasekhar Mantha has expressed discontent over the probe by state police. The court said that the police was under pressure and unable to perform. It was observed that the family members of the girl were reportedly not present.

The court also directed that the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights’ will coordinate with the SIT.
