Kabir Khan opens up about ‘Kabul Express’ legal battle with a producer; says, ‘It was depressing in those days’ – Times of India

Kabir Khan has come a long way in Bollywood. The filmmaker has had his share of struggle in the industry and the road to success has not been an easy one. In a recent interview, the ’83 director opened up on his legal tussle over his first film, ‘Kabul Express’. He recalled the time when a person claimed to be the producer of the project after it was taken over by Yash Raj Films. The case went to the High Court and it was thrown out by the judge, Kabir revealed to Mashable India.

Without taking any names, Kabir said that he had met many people for the film and some of them were self-styled producers who assured they’d make the movie. “No documents were signed, we’d met over coffee, and they declared themselves the producer,” he recalled. Later, when YRF came on board, they took the matter to court and claimed that it was their story. Kabir felt that this was a mistake as the High Court judge said, “Here’s a person who’s spent two years in Afghanistan, has done four documentaries, and then here are you, who’s never been to Kabul. You want me to believe this is your story?”

The case was thus dismissed but Kabir said Aditya Chopra put the might of his legal team behind him for support. He said it was still a very stressful time because it was his first film. “It was depressing in those days. You used to wake up in the morning with a sword hanging over your head.”

Kabir won a National Award for ‘Kabul Express’ and then there was no looking back. Since then, he has given hits like ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ and ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. His last film was Ranveer Singh’ starrer ’83 that did not perform well at the box office.
