JW Anderson X Uniqlo Drops Today And Here’s What We’re Buying
It’s fair to say that Uniqlo has got the designer collaboration down to a tee: from Marni to Jil Sander, the high street brand’s clean-lined DNA lends itself perfectly to design partnership. It is, however, Uniqlo’s JW Anderson collection that has drummed-up some of the greatest hype over the years, and we have no doubt that the spring/summer 2023 drop (which arrives today) will sell out just as quickly as the ones that came before it.
For anyone like myself who usually struggles with summer florals and bohemianism, this one’s for you. JW Anderson’s latest Uniqlo offering is a lesson in preppy styling, and draws heavily on heritage sportswear and varsity-inspired separates: think cricket-inspired knitwear, pleated tennis skirts, rugby shirt dresses, and reworked sports jackets.
“Ultimately, this season is reworking our idea of classic sportswear,” Anderson explains. “For instance, a traditional cricket jumper alongside technical sports leggings, or hand-drawn traditional British sporting team motifs on technical swim shorts and more traditional knitted polo shirts. With each collection, we expand the JW Anderson and Uniqlo wardrobe with pieces that can be mixed throughout the season. It’s wardrobe building.”
Online versus reality
Team Vogue was lucky enough to be given a sneak preview of the collection, and we can confirm that it looks even better IRL. We were particularly drawn to the cute pleated minidresses and skirts, which will look suitably summery with loafers and a layered cardigan, but then take on an edgier finish with an oversized leather jacket and sneakers.
“As a JW Anderson superfan, I always hotly anticipate the brand’s upcoming Uniqlo drops,” says Vogue fashion features editor, Laura Hawkins. “Anderson is a master at bringing a subversive touch to collegiate tropes, and I’ll be packing his rugby top dresses and pleated tennis skirts for every summer weekend away. Top tip: look to the collection’s striped men’s shirting and pair with those super girlish skirts for an off-kilter dressing twist.”
