Juventus: President Gianluca Ferrero ‘wants club icon Alessandro Del Piero to replace Pavel Nedved’

Juventus want Alessandro Del Piero to become their new vice-president, according to reports in Italy.

The club’s entire board resigned on Monday, with economics expert Gianluca Ferrero appointed as the new president to clean up the mess after the mass exodus.

And as reported by Gazzetto dello Sport, 59-year-old Ferrero wants iconic former striker Del Piero to replace Pavel Nedved as a club chief, with the Italian giants potentially looking to club legends to rescue them from their crisis.

Juventus’ new board will take over on January 18, 2023, with president Ferrero, CEO Maurizio Scanavino and John Elkann, CEO of Exor, the company that owns the club, said to be keen on making Del Piero one of that number.

Exor are believed to want figures with a deep knowledge of football and Juventus itself to help steady the ship and navigate the financial chaos of the Turin team.

Only manager Massimiliano Allegri – who had to be convinced to stay, albeit his long-term future is in doubt – and chief Federico Cherubini are the only people in senior leadership roles at the moment.

Talks with famous former No 10 and 2006 World Cup winner Del Piero have not yet begun, but the 50-year-old – who scored 290 goals in 705 appearances for the Old Lady from 1993-2012, did little to play down speculation of his imminent arrival. 

On Monday, shortly after the wave of resignations, he told beIN Sports: ‘It’s early to say, I spent almost 20 years, I decided to stay despite relegation. Obviously, the relationship between the owners and me and the fans is quite deep, very deep. We’ve been through everything. this great journey brought me here with you.

‘Every news regarding Juve, for me, is very emotional. I’m on standby, I’ll see what’s going to happen. I was there this summer for the tour in LA where I live and I saw all of them in Lisbon, I am a friend of Pavel [Nedved] and everyone. First of all, this is a sad situation.’
