Josip Juranovic on his Panenka in Germany and why Celtic can go into the Conference League with confidence

CELTIC full-back Josip Juranovic last night revealed he had decided to try his audacious Panenka penalty against Bayer Leverkusen earlier this month.

Juranovic scored an equaliser from the spot five minutes before half-time in the Europa League match in the BayArena after Lukas Hradecky had fouled Kyogo Furuhashi.

The Croatian, who had previously converted from 12 yards against Real Betis and St Johnstone, dinked a chip beyond Hradecky and into the net off the underside of the crossbar.

“Actually two weeks ago I was speaking to Joe Hart and I told him I will do a Panenka the next time I get the chance,” he said

“Joe is amazing. He is top class. A top person and a top goalkeeper and he showed that with his saves tonight.”

Juranovic was devastated that Ange Postecoglou’s side conceded two late goals to suffer a 3-2 defeat and miss out on a place in the Europa League knockout rounds.

However, he was encouraged by how the Parkhead club performed against the fourth-placed side in the Bundesliga and believes they can go into the Conference League next year with confidence.

“I feel disappointed because we lost the game, but I am also proud of the team because we faced a really good team, a Champions League team, and we showed that when we are away from home that we will attack and score goals,” he said.

“Unfortunately for us we also conceded three bad goals. But we will learn from that.

“You can see that Celtic is growing as a team. Each game we want to improve, we listen to the coach. He has some new tactics and I think that you can see in every game that we are improving and growing as a team. That is most important.”
