Josh Gordon thanks Chiefs fans after failing to make roster

Former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Josh Gordon thanked the organization and fans, despite not making the 53-man roster.

Gordon left Kansas City with grace, and the organization could repay him somewhere down the road.

The Chiefs had too many wide receivers on the training camp roster — seven, to be exact — prior to cut day. To make room for those more deserving, Brett Veach and Co. let go of Gordon, who struggled during camp.

Gordon was well-known amongst Chiefs fans for his work in the community, rather than his play on the field. In 2021, he had just five catches for 32 yards, which was far from enough to guarantee a roster spot this year.

Chiefs: Josh Gordon thanks fans for support

Even without Tyreek Hill, Gordon’s best-case scenario in Kansas City was to make the practice squad. However, it appears he’ll look elsewhere first — Gordon is expected to visit the Tennessee Titans this week.

On social media Gordon thanked Chiefs fans for their support.

That post appears to be a farewell message, rather than a preview of what’s to come. Even Andy Reid made it sound like Gordon was likely on his way out, though he did leave the door open.

“Listen, I’m proud of Josh for all that he did. [It was] a real pleasure to have him here,” Reid said in his Tuesday press conference. “There’s a chance that he potentially is back here and if it doesn’t work out somewhere else, but just from a football standpoint but also even the bigger picture of things, he really did a heck of a job.”

Gordon burst onto the scene as a rookie in Cleveland, but hasn’t done much since. Much of that is due to personal problems and off-the-field influences. In the right situation, he could still contribute.
