Josh Addo-Carr scores one of the great Origin solo tries and emulates Billy Slater’s masterpiece
Josh Addo-Carr scores one of the great Origin solo tries and brings back memories of Billy Slater’s masterpiece as fans brand him a ‘freak of nature’
Josh Addo-Carr scored one of the great solo tries in State of Origin history in Sydney on Wednesday night.
Cody Walker and Bradman Best combined to free the Canterbury winger in space on the left wing, before Addo-Carr chipped the ball over Maroons fullback AJ Brimson and motored past him to chase down his own kick.
The Blues winger got the bounce and touched down to cap a stunning 60-metre effort that gave New South Wales a 10-6 lead in the series finale.
‘That was magic,’ former Maroons captain Cameron Smith said in commentary on Nine.
‘We all know how fast this man is, but the skill that he showed in this little piece of play down the left-hand side.

His effort brought back memories of Billy Slater’s sensational effort for Queensland in the second game of the 2004 series.
With the Maroons trailing by a point and less than 20 minutes on the clock, Slater pounced on a Darren Lockyer’s grubber kick to chip Blues fullback Anthony Minichiello and score after regathering the Steeden.
Unsurprisingly, Addo-Carr’s stunning effort immediately went viral on social media with fans describing the Blues winger as a ‘freak of nature’, while others questioned why Brad Fittler omitted the Canterbury star from his Origin squad last year.
Addo-Carr’s spectacular solo try came after he played a crucial role in setting up the Blues’ opening score.
The Blues winger skipped past Brimson down the sideline before New South Wales switched play from left to right, with a tap on from Keaon Koloamatangi allowing Stephen Crichton to send Panthers teammate Brian To’o flying over in the corner.
Speaking on commentary on Nine, former Blues star Paul Gallen said Walker had revitalised the Blues’ moribund attack.
‘Cody Walker on that left-hand edge is tearing apart the right edge of Queensland. There’s no communication at the moment between Valentine Holmes and Daly Cherry-Evans,’ he said.
‘They normally work so well together. Valentine Holmes is stuck in two minds.

While another supporter suggested Addo-Carr’s detractors should apologise
‘He’s come in a few times to protect Daly Cherry-Evans when Martin is running that lead time. No time he was stuck in no man’s land and Best goes straight through for his first try in Origin.’
