Borussia Monchengladbach are mourning the loss of Under-23 star Jordi Bongard after he was killed in a fatal traffic accident on Wednesday night.
Bongard, 20, had worked his way up to Borussia’s Under-23 side over the past nine years after first joining their academy at the age of 12.
But on Thursday morning the German club confirmed their young centre-back tragically lost his life after being involved in a traffic accident the previous evening.

Alongside a photo of Bongard, Borussia wrote on Twitter: ‘Borussia mourns Jordi Bongard. Our U23 player died in a traffic accident last night.
‘We express our deepest sympathy to his family and loved ones and wish them strength. Jordi will always be in our thoughts & hearts!’
Following the tragic news of Bongard’s passing, Borussia have cancelled all training sessions and press conferences that were due to be held on Thursday.
Sporting director Roland Virkus also said: ‘We received this terrible news this morning and we are stunned. Our deepest sympathy and our thoughts are with Jordi’s family.’

Bongard, who scored nine goals in 74 appearances for Borussia’s Under-17, Under-19 and Under-23 sides, was rewarded with his first professional contract in July of last year.
Tributes are flooding in for the player on Twitter, with fans and rival clubs paying their respects after hearing the tragic news.
FC Cologne replied to Borussia’s post and said: ‘The #effzeh family are shocked and in mourning over Jordi Bongard’s passing. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and everyone at Gladbach in this difficult time.’
Eintracht Frankfurt also said: ‘Our deepest condolences to all his relatives and to Borussia! We send a lot of strength from Frankfurt’.
Arminia Bielefeld posted: ‘Our deepest sympathy goes to Jordi’s family and loved ones. We wish them and you a lot of strength!’
