Joker 2: ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ shooting images leaked online, show Lady Gaga as Harleen Quinzel
It’s not a surprise considering the movie’s massive box office success, earning $1.074 billion as an R-rated film. What is surprising, however, is the movie’s extravagant title, Joker: Folie à Deux, and Phillips’ intention to turn it into a musical. The returning Joaquin Phoenix is now accompanied by Lady Gaga, who will play Dr Harleen Quinzel or Harley Quinn. Phillips shared a Valentine’s Day message back in February that included a glimpse of Gaga in the role.

Many fans are clueless about the nature of this upcoming Joker sequel. The newest leaked photos from the set, which capture Arthur Dent running away from other Jokers, don’t provide much insight into director Todd Phillips’ intentions either. Though we get a glimpse of Lady Gaga as Quinzel in the latest pictures, the bundled-up character wearing a grey cap does not reveal much about the film’s direction.
Although theft hasn’t been a significant part of Harley’s backstory, the recently leaked scene seems to align well with her established origin. Originally introduced in Batman: The Animated Series, Harley Quinn was Harleen Quinzel, a psychologist who worked at Arkham Asylum and was assigned to treat the Joker.
As she delved into the Joker’s disturbed psyche, Quinzel eventually broke and became Harley Quinn. In recent years, creators have attempted to distance Harley from her “abused girlfriend” narrative by giving her a romantic relationship with Poison Ivy and breaking things off completely with the Joker, as depicted in The Suicide Squad as well as Birds of Prey.
Based on the set photos, it seems that Joker: Folie à Deux will return to Harley’s roots. However, with Lady Gaga’s undeniable screen presence, it’s doubtful that she will portray the same victimized character from previous depictions of Harley.
