Joe Marler’s apology for insulting Bristol forward Jake Heenan’s hospital-bound mother is unlikely to stop him from facing a long ban which could hinder a possible England return.
Marler’s goading provoked a strong response from Heenan and began a mini brawl in a game which ended with his side Harlequins suffering a shock home defeat.
To make matters worse for Marler, he is expected to be cited by the RFU on Thursday for his actions. If Marler is found to have abused Heenan, he is likely to be suspended for at least six weeks.

That could rise to 12 or even 18 weeks in a worst-case scenario for the 32-year-old given his poor disciplinary record is likely to count against him.
Marler on Wednesday apologised to Heenan on Twitter, describing his comments as ‘p*** poor.’ He also made personal contact with the Bears man.
Marler is now sweating on the possibility another suspension after his latest brush with controversy.

In 2016, he called Wales prop Samson Lee ‘gypsy boy’ and in 2020, was suspended for 10 weeks for grabbing another Wales player in Alun Wyn Jones by the testicles.
Marler missed England’s autumn campaign. His experience means he would likely be of interest to new national head coach Steve Borthwick for the 2023 Six Nations but a ban would mean he would likely be unavailable for the start of the Championship.
Saracens hope England pair Maro Itoje and Jamie George will be fit to face Exeter on Saturday after suffering with concussion and a heal problem respectively.
