US President Joe Biden has warned congressional Republicans about lifting the government’s debt ceiling and called their offer “unacceptable”. However, he did say that he would be willing to cut the spending together with tax adjustment to reach an agreement. After meeting the Group of Seven (G7) leaders and leaving Japan, Biden characterised GOP proposals as “extreme” and warned that they could not gain sufficient support in Congress.

US President also said that he was not able to promise the global leaders that America would not default at G7 talks. He further added, “I can’t guarantee that they will not force a default by doing something outrageous”. He delivered the remarks before leaving for Washington indicating that congressional Republicans and the White House still remain at odds. Biden was expected to speak with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy after taking off aboard Air Force One. It still remains unclear if their conversation would break the logjam. “My guess is he’s going to want to deal directly with me in making sure we’re all on the same page,” he said.

Republicans have been seeking spending cuts in the federal budget in exchange for their support to increase the borrowing limit for the country. Earlier on Sunday, Biden addressed the “significant” disagreements between the White House and Republicans. While he insisted that he’s willing to cut spending, tax “revenue is not off the table” as part of the agreement.

McCarthy had previously said that Biden had previously told him that tax increases were “off the table”. In an interview on Fox News, House Speaker said “He’s now bringing something to the table that everyone said was off the table” and that “It seems as though he wants to fault more than he wants a deal”. During his news conference, Biden said that most of what Republicans have proposed was “unacceptable”.
