J&K police warns against international calls campaigning against G-20 meeting in Kashmir

The Jammu and Kashmir police have issued an advisory directing people not to respond to calls from international numbers which are spreading rumours against the upcoming G20 event in Kashmir.

The police in both Kashmir and Jammu divisions have issued advisories against “telecommunication from suspicious ISD/ virtual phone numbers” stating that the issue is being investigated under a case registered at the cyber police station in Kashmir.

“The general public is advised to remain cautious…and are requested not to respond to any such calls which are spreading rumours regarding the upcoming G20 event,” read the advisory issued here.

The police informed that the cyber police in Kashmir has already taken cognizance in a case (FIR No. 11/2023) registered with it and investigation is underway. Officials urged people to contact the cyber police station in Kashmir for any grievance on this issue. The police have directed not to respond to numbers +44 7520 693559, +447418343648 and +44 7520 693134 ,+44 7418 343648 or any ISD number/virtual numbers.

“These numbers are spreading anti-national messages/propaganda and the general public is requested to remain alert towards such attempts and not to respond to any such suspicious calls. Citizens are requested that all such calls may be reported to the police,” said Vijay Kumar, additional director general of police in Kashmir.

Over the last few days, scores of locals in the union territory have received calls from international numbers with a recorded message “against the scheduled G20 meeting” in Srinagar from May 22 to May 24. The message from these international numbers mainly “urge people to boycott the event and arrange protest gatherings”.

The Hurriyat Conference has issued a statement against the G20 event saying that the government of India is trying to portray “fake normalcy imposed on gunpoint”. The delegates from China and Turkey are likely to skip the meeting in Srinagar. The administration has beefed up security across Srinagar city, where specialised NSG and Marcos commandos, besides the army, CRPF and police are conducting regular security drills and searches to ensure security and safety of the visiting foreign delegates and the venue. At least 70 foreign delegates and around the same number of officials from Union ministries and offices would be in Srinagar for the meeting.

Delegates are expected to participate in the main meeting here at the International Convention centre on the banks of the Dal Lake and visit the nearby Royal Spring Golf Course. The scheduled visit to Gulmarg is likely to be cancelled while the administration has already cancelled the earlier plan of their visit to Dachigam National Park which is around 20 km from the Srinagar city centre.
