Jim Harbaugh has reportedly worn out his NFL welcome with flip-flopping interest

Michigan fans may not have to go through any more Jim Harbaugh-to-the-NFL rumors with the head coach reportedly losing interest from pro teams.

Broncos owner Greg Penner recently met in person to discuss the open head coaching position in Denver…but it shouldn’t be cause for concern for Michigan.

Adam Schefter reported the story for ESPN on Saturday night, confirming earlier rumblings on Twitter that the Broncos had circled back to Harbaugh.

Two things from Schefter’s report should interest Michigan fans, and their rivals: 1) The Broncos took another swing at Harbaugh and apparently missed. So Harbaugh isn’t going anywhere. 2) Rumors linking Harbaugh to the NFL may be less likely to crop up again next year.

“One league source predicted this week that the league will move on and Harbaugh is not likely to have many NFL options in the future,” Schefter wrote.

If that’s not music to Wolverine ears, what is?

Jim Harbaugh appears to have worn out his NFL welcome

The last two offseasons at Michigan have been filled with speculation and rumors about Harbaugh leaving Ann Arbor for the NFL.

On the one hand, Harbaugh has been consistent with his messaging about staying at Michigan. He’s confirmed and re-confirmed his commitment to the Wolverines.

On the other hand, he’s invited interest and taken interviews with multiple NFL franchises. Last year he met with the Vikings. This year he met with the Broncos. He also agreed to an in-person meeting in Ann Arbor with the team owner.

Michigan fans are tired of the back-and-forth between Harbaugh and the NFL, so the idea that pro teams are losing interest in the head coach is a welcome development.

Of course, that may be the case in January of 2023. If Harbaugh leads Michigan to the College Football Playoff again, and does one better by winning it, will interest be piqued again?

The frustration is real, but at least it’s better to have a coach who is successful enough to garner NFL attention than one who is not.
