Jersey actress Mrunal Thakur on her struggles with body shaming: “I was called matka by trolls” – Times of India

Being trolled for having a certain type of body is not unusual. It is something that is experienced not only by a common person but by a lot of celebrities too.

In an Interview with Times Now, Jersey actress Mrunal Thakur opened up about being trolled for having a “pear-shaped body” and being referred to as a “matka”.

“I have a pear-shaped body. My briefing was always like, ‘Mrunal, you need to cut down from your lower body.’ But excuse me, that’s my body type. If I cut down — I start losing weight from my face, then my upper body and then it would reach my lower body – I will still have that shape. So rather than people calling me matka and me feeling bad, I take a lot of pride in it,” she says.

“When I was in the US, people said a lot of women pay to get that body. When someone called me the Indian Kardashian, I was so happy that yes we need to celebrate. And now I have the confidence to post a picture and I just want to make sure that these trolls do not affect me,” she added.

Encouraging young girls to own their bodies, she says, “I want to raise my voice because there are a lot of people, a lot of girls who have the same body type as I do. I just want to normalise and tell them that it’s okay to have a pear-shaped body and wear high-waisted pants and a cropped top. If they have that ‘matka’ shaped body, then own it, f***ing own it.”

Bollywood celebs who have addressed body shaming

The act of making a person feel uncomfortable or humiliating them for their weight or size is called body shaming.

As glamorous as the Bollywood industry seems like, trolls and inappropriate comments have become a part of many of the celebrities’ lives.

As far as body shaming is concerned, from Vidya Balan to Huma Qureshi to Sonakshi Sinha, many B-Town actresses have raised their voices against it.

Illeana D’Cruz in an interview revealed how people from the movie industry repeatedly told her to undergo surgeries to enhance her appearance.

“I remember those days like it was yesterday. It’s weird because it’s a very deeply ingrained scar. I went through body-shaming right from the time I was 12. I had just hit puberty and growing up. You are hit with these weird comments,” she said.

That said, the idea of body positivity has thrived in recent years and many celebrities have also advocated for it.
