Jazz ‘sign Paul Reed to three-year, $24million offer sheet’ giving Sixers decision to make on center
Jazz ‘sign center Paul Reed to three-year, $24million offer sheet’ as Sixers have until Sunday night to match and retain restricted free agent
The Jazz have signed center Paul Reed to a three-year, $24million offer sheet according to multiple reports – giving the Sixers a decision to make on the restricted free agent.
Reed, who’s spent the first three years of his career in Philly, has carved out a role as a serviceable backup behind Joel Embiid and played over 14 minutes per night this year in the postseason.
But the cost of keeping Reed would be steep for the Sixers.
Aside from the $24million deal they’d be matching, the contract would send the team past the $165million luxury tax threshold and incur an additional $14million in penalties, as ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski noted.
Additionally, Reed would reportedly have veto power on a trade for a year if he stays with the Sixers.

In an interesting wrinkle from Utah’s CEO of basketball operations Danny Ainge, the last two years of Reed’s deal will also become fully guaranteed if the Sixers make the second round of the playoffs this year, Wojnarowski said.
The Sixers are in the midst of what could be a transformational offseason, with James Harden possibly on the way out of Philadelphia.
The 10-time All-Star picked up his $35.6million option, with the move done so he and the Sixers could explore finding a trade for him, ESPN and The Athletic reported.
Harden could’ve signed up to a four-year, $210million deal but it looks likely he’s played his last game in Philly after his team crashed out in the second round to the Celtics.
Thus, with the team’s status as a contender up in the air, it’s unclear whether it will want to pay the luxury tax to keep Reed.
