Jamie Vardy hands Leicester a boost as he signs new two-year deal to stay at the King Power Stadium

Jamie Vardy has handed troubled Leicester a huge boost by signing a new two-year deal with the club.

The veteran forward, possibly the greatest player in the club’s history, will extend his stay at King Power Stadium beyond his 37th birthday.

Vardy joined Leicester for £1million from non-league Fleetwood in 2012 and has made history for the club, helping them win the Premier League title and the FA Cup for the first time.

Chelsea and Manchester United both expressed interest in the 35-year-old this summer

As Vardy had entered the final year of his contract, there had been tentative expressions of interest from Chelsea and Manchester United, but the 35-year-old’s sole focus was to stay at Leicester.

Vardy’s new contract should lift the mood at Leicester after a troubled summer. Chelsea target Wesley Fofana missed parts of this week’s training programme and is unlikely to feature in Saturday’s league game against Southampton. 

The Blues have offered up to £65million for Fofana but Leicester are holding out for more than £80m, which would be a world record fee for a defender.

Leicester are also the only club in Europe’s top five leagues yet to make a senior outfield signing, with the club’s tight financial situation restricting their movements in the transfer market.
