Jamie Carragher believes it’s ‘odd’ Jurgen Klopp hasn’t been involved in puhsing through Mohamed Salah’s new contract – and says that fans will realise how ‘lucky’ they are to have seen his goal feats in 25 years’ time.
The Liverpool star’s deal expires in the summer of 2023 and it’s understood he is one of several key players the club want to prioritise trying to tie down.
However, there has been little progress recently in any talks with Salah, which is causing some anxiety among Liverpool fans.
Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool deal expires in 2023 and he is yet to commit his future to the club
The club secured the futures of Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Fabinho over the summer and will sit down with Salah’s representatives over the coming months.
As thing stand, Klopp has had little input in any discusssions around Salah’s contract and Carragher admits he doesn’t understand why, given the part he played in pushing through Henderson’s new four-year contract.
‘Klopp vowed captain Jordan Henderson’s deal would ‘get sorted’ after a brief stalemate and it immediately was, yet says he is ‘not involved’ with Salah’s negotiations,’ Carragher told The Telegraph.
‘That seems odd. If there is a sound reason for not resolving the Salah contract situation with the same urgency, it is yet to be satisfactorily explained.
Jamie Carragher doesn’t get why Jurgen Klopp isn’t trying to push through Salah’s new deal
‘Whenever we talk about Liverpool’s renaissance, we often focus on the influence of Van Dijk and Alisson, taking the team to another level.
‘That’s fair, but we should not forget that the foundations were in place because of the immediate impact of Salah, who was already on his way to scoring 44 goals in his first season when Van Dijk signed.’
The former defender, who insisted that Salah was already a Liverpool legend, added: ‘Twenty-five years from now, fans will examine this era and consider how lucky they were to witness Salah’s goal feats. They will rewatch the videos and see his statistics with a sense of awe.
‘I hope they will not look back and ask this: Why on earth did he leave before he had a chance to beat Roger Hunt’s record?’
Liverpool announced earlier this week the sad news of record league goalscorer Hunt passing away aged 83.
Hunt, who was also part of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning campaign, scored an incredible 244 league goals for the Reds during his tiime for the club.
Salah, who is generally considered to not get the love from the Liverpool fans his performances warrant, is someway behind that tally, having recently reached the 100 league goals landmark, but has underlined his significance to Klopp’s team this term with eight goals already in all competitions.
