Jamie Carragher has hit back at fellow pundit Patrice Evra after the Frenchman took a swipe at him for his criticism of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo was handed the captain’s armband by Ralf Rangnick on Monday evening but he failed to galvanise his team-mates as they delivered another below-par display to lose 1-0 at home to Wolves.

The result has harvested fresh questions over the Portuguese star’s impact since returning to Old Trafford last summer, a question that Carragher addressed back in November during a heated debate with Roy Keane.

‘You finish second and sign Ronaldo at 36 – you’re not going to win the League in four years. If you sign someone at 36 it’s to win right now,’ Carragher stated, before asking: ‘Are they any closer to winning the league?’

Those comments irked Evra, who felt the need to come to the defence of his former United team-mate.

While working for Amazon Prime, the Frenchman said: ‘There’s a lot of talk about this player and I really don’t understand it.

‘Some player like Jamie Carragher, he had 775 games, today Cristiano scored 801 goals. And those kind of people talk about Cristiano.

‘Sometimes I just think people have to stay in their lane and I don’t understand that hate.’

However, following Monday’s match, Carragher couldn’t help but bite back at Evra.

The Sky Sports pundit took to Twitter and wrote: ‘Getting back out of my lane!’

Carragher has previously gone further with his criticism of Ronaldo, suggesting that the 36-year-old can be a ‘passenger’ when not delivering goals for his team.

‘How can a club the size of Manchester United still rely on a guy who’s nearly 37?’ he previously stated.

‘He was unbelievable, his goal record is unbelievable, but if he doesn’t score he is a passenger in the game. You have to accept that, that’s a fact.

‘If Cristiano Ronaldo went four or five games without scoring, that’s a massive problem for Manchester United.’
