Jamie Carragher delivered Roy Keane a withering putdown in a reference to their blazing row about why Manchester United signed Cristiano Ronaldo.

Club icon Keane insisted the Red Devils brought CR7 in to win the FA Cup, but Ralf Rangnick’s side were knocked out of the competition by Middlesbrough at Old Trafford on Friday evening.

And Liverpool legend Carragher took to social media and addressed his 1.8million Twitter followers, as well as Keane, directly with a brutal reminder of Keane’s previous comments.

Carragher’s post – which has almost 10,000 retweets and more than 75,000 likes at the time of writing – reads: ‘Roy Keane told me Man Utd had signed Ronaldo to win the #FACup,’ followed by a shrugging emoji and the hashtag #MUNMID.

Back in November, a routine appearance on Sky Sports after Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United had exploded into a screaming match between the pair.

Keane expressed his surprise that star man Ronaldo was subsitututed off after an hour, while Carragher declared the Portuguese isn’t the player he was and him coming off should not be a ‘big story’.

Carragher said: ‘Why did Man United sign Cristiano Ronaldo? They signed him to stop him going to Man City. There was no plan to sign Cristiano Ronaldo.’

Keane hit back: ‘He was always going to play, he wasn’t coming back to Man United to stop him going to Man City but sit on the bench.

Carragher responded: ‘Are United closer to the league title than they were last season? No. You speak about goalscorers, you bring your own input to the team, but it’s a team game.’ Keane hit back that Ronaldo was never brought back to United to win titles.

The Irishman added: ‘It’s the FA Cup and getting in the Champions League. They’ve got to next round of the Champions League, how much is that worth to the club? If you’re looking at the business side of it, that’s why he’s come back.’

Carragher responded: ‘When you sign Ronaldo at 36, it’s not to win in four years. If you sign someone at 36 or 37 it’s to win right now. If you sign Varane, a four-time Champions League winner, a World Cup winner right now. Are they any closer to winning?’

Ronaldo missed a first-half penalty against Boro, with Matt Crooks’ equaliser cancelling out Jadon Sancho’s opener and taking the game to extra time. The 37-year-old scored in the shoot-out but Anthony Elanga’s miss proved vital.
