El Dorado (1967)
All of 27, Caan impressed the audience as he played a gambler in this film. He shared the frame with acting stalwarts like Johy Wayne and Robert Mitchum in ‘El Dorado’.
Brian’s Song (1971)
James Cann essayed the lead in this film, which traced the life of Brian Piccolo, a Chicago Bears football player stricken with terminal cancer. His act won him a Primetime Emmy nomination.
The Godfather (1972)
James essayed Santino “Sonny” Corleone in this epic, helmed by Francis Ford Coppola. This convincing performance won Brian his first and only Oscar nomination.
The Gambler (1974)
Caan very convincingly played the role of a literature professor battling a gambling addiction in this Karel Reisz directorial.
Funny Lady (1975)
This musical was a sequel to Funny Girl, it explored Caan and Barbra Streisand’s intense romance. He bagged a Golden Globe nomination for his performance.
Born in 1940 in New York City, James Caan was the son of a kosher butcher. His first stint as an actor was in the 1961 Broadway production of ‘Blood, Sweat and Stanley Poole’. The actor was last seen in Michael Lembeck’s ‘Queen Bees’, which released in June 2021.
