Jameis Winston injury update: Saints QB suffers knee injury, replaced by Trevor Siemian vs. Buccaneers

Jameis Winston suffered a serious-looking injury during the Saints’ Week 8 game against the Buccaneers on Sunday.

The injury occurred when Winston scrambled for 3 yards on a second-and-9 in the early stages of the second quarter. He was brought down on what was called a horse-collar tackle and his leg bent back awkwardly.

Winston got up and attempted to walk off the field, but he was only able to take a handful of very slow steps before he gingerly lowered himself to the ground.

Winston was attended to by the Saints’ medical staff and they eventually helped him off the field. He was checked out on the sideline and brought into the blue medical tent. He was carted off the field shortly after receiving his initial treatment.

The Saints later announced that Winston had suffered a knee injury and was questionable to return. Fox Sports’ Tom Rinaldi reported at the start of the second half that Winston had been ruled out of the game.

IYER: 15 players most likely to be dealt at 2021 NFL trade deadline

Trevor Siemian replaced Winston at quarterback. A seventh-round draft pick by the Broncos in 2015, Siemian has started 25 games in his career and is 13-12. He has completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 5,689 yards, 30 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.

Taysom Hill, who competed for the starting job with Winston during the offseason, was unavailable in Week 8. He is still dealing with the effects of a concussion he suffered against Washington in Week 5.

If Winston misses significant time, Hill would likely be the starter when healthy. Siemian would hold the fort until then with fourth-round rookie Ian Book serving as the team’s top backup.
