JOHANNESBURG – Irish powerhouse, Leinster Rugby, have confirmed the appointment of Springbok Head Coach Jacques Nienaber after the Rugby World Cup this year.
Nienaber will take up a role on head coach Leo Cullen’s staff, replacing current senior coach Stuart Lancaster, who will leave his role at the end of the season to join Racing 92 in France.
“We are delighted to confirm that Jacques Nienaber will be joining Leinster Rugby next season. Jacques is a world-class coach with a winning track record at the very highest level of the game, and we’re all looking forward to learning from him over the coming seasons,” Cullen said.
Cullen hopes Nienaber’s addition to the club will give them an edge over the South African teams in the United Rigby Championship (URC) due to his in-depth knowledge of the players and his experience of working with the world champions.
“It continues to be an amazing time with the Springboks and it’s a privilege to be involved in my third World Cup after 2011 and 2019. Being in a World Cup year, my focus will be back on defending the title back-to-back,” Nienaber said.
Nienaber has been in charge of the Boks since January 2020, having been Rassie Erasmus’ assistant when they won the Rugby World Cup in 2019. The 50-year-old took over when Erasmus was elevated to the Director of Rugby position at SA Rugby.
Erasmus is contracted until 2025 and at this stage is expected to stay with SA Rugby.
