THERE appears to be little interest from Jack Catterall in facing Ohara Davies once again.
The two British super-lightweights fought one another in October 2018 with Catterall a clear winner by unanimous decision.
In the time since both boxers have travelled different routes to get to the higher echelons of the 140lbs division.
An inactive Catterall beat three underwhelming opponents before turning in the performance of his career against Josh Taylor early last year. The Chorley southpaw was on the wrong side of an egregious decision awarded to the Scot in Glasgow. Catterall returned this past weekend, making his debut for Matchroom, with an impressive 10-round performance against Darragh Foley.
Davies is unbeaten in seven fights since losing to ‘El Gato’ which has included a fortunate victory against Miguel Vazquez as well as a career best win against Lewis Ritson last time out.
The Londoner is seemingly on the cusp of landing a shot at Rolando Romero and his world belt. However, Catterall’s promoter Eddie Hearn has said he would like to make the Davies fight should neither land the big fights they are chasing.
“I can’t see Rolly fighting him if I’m dead honest,” Catterall told Boxing News.
“I think Rolly will vacate the belt and Ohara will probably box for a vacant title. I don’t see the big interest in that fight happening, but you know what if he gets the world title shot, I think Ohara can beat him. So, you know what I wish him all the best for that fight.”
Romero has talked up a potential pay-per-view money spinner against Ryan Garcia who is now in the 10 stone mix after losing to Gervonta Davis at 136lbs. However, the WBA has ordered Romero to defend his belt against Davies. Both teams have until June 29 to reach a deal, or the fight will go to purse bids.
Should Davies emerge with the belt over his shoulder then, and only then, would Catterall be interested in fighting ‘Two Tanks’ for a second time.
“The only time I would fight Ohara Davies [is] if there was a world title on the line,” he informed BN.
“That fight really doesn’t interest me.
“I probably beat him in first gear last time and it wasn’t the most interesting fight but if there was a world title on the line then it’s definitely something we could consider.”
