Ja Morant will step away from team to ‘get help’

After receiving a two-game suspension from the Memphis Grizzlies following yet another concerning incident Saturday morning, Ja Morant has decided to step away from the team.

In a statement released by his lawyer via Shams Charania of ‘The Athletic,’ Morant apologized and vowed to seek help for his recent troubling behavior.

“I take full responsibility for my actions last night,” Morant said. “I’m sorry to my family, teammates, coaches, fans, partners, the city of Memphis and the entire Grizzlies organization for letting you down. I’m going to take some time away to get help and work on learning better methods of dealing with stress and my overall well-being.”

Early Saturday morning, Morant went live on Instagram from a nightclub, dancing and rapping along to music while appearing to hold a firearm. Shortly after the video began circulating, the Grizzlies suspended Morant for at least the team’s next two games.

This is just the latest in a string of tough moments for the Memphis star. On Thursday, the ‘Washington Post’ revealed that the NBA investigated several incidents involving Morant last summer, including allegations that the Grizzlies guard punched a teenager multiple times and in a separate incident threatened a mall security guard.

Finding help for his erratic conduct is a positive first step for Morant, though he has a long ways to go before his reputation might wash clean. It’s possible that the NBA could investigate this latest incident, as well.
