‘It’s SCHOOLBOY’: Gary Neville tears into ‘desperate’ Virgil van Dijk after fouling Gabriel Jesus
‘It’s SCHOOLBOY stuff’: Gary Neville tears into ‘desperate’ Virgil van Dijk after his clumsy foul on Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus and says Liverpool defenders are ‘not even doing the basics’ as they concede twice in first half against Arsenal
- Gary Neville has ridiculed Virgil van Dijk over his defending against Arsenal
- The former Man United full-back labelled Liverpool’s Dutchman as ‘desperate’
- And raised concerns as he insisted that Liverpool’s defence has been ‘really bad’
Gary Neville has torn into Virgil van Dijk after the Liverpool defender brought down Arsenal’s Garbriel Jesus in a bid to deny the striker a goalscoring opportunity.
Liverpool were trailing Arsenal 2-0 at Anfield after goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Jesus, with the latter then trying to add his second of the afternoon before being hacked down by Van Dijk.
The centre-back had been beaten for pace by Jesus and had to bring him down or risk the forward being through on goal and in a one-on-one with Liverpool shot-stopper Alisson.
Co-commentator Neville stated that the Dutch defender had lashed out through ‘desperation’ after he already played a huge part in Arsenal’s opening goal.
‘Deary me, deary, deary me, that’s desperation, not frustration. No one to run back. He was beaten, well beaten,’ said Neville.

‘There is an element of luck in that Liverpool back four. You can defend them as they have the credit in the bank over the years, the performances, but it’s getting really difficult.
‘They’re not doing the basics. Even there, Trent not sprinting back. Van Dijk idling across, legging someone up. It’s schoolboy stuff,’ he added.
