It’s Only August, But Fashion Girls Are Already Wearing Autumn’s It Jacket

Fashion lovers can be divided into two camps: summer-philes who will always be the first to go tights-free at the first sign of spring (and cling to their broderie anglaise frocks until plummeting temperates threaten pneumonia), and the cold-weather crew who miserably plod through the balmy months in black dresses until they can dive headfirst into a pile of chunky knitwear come September 1.

I am and have always been in the second camp, and it’s around this time that my fellow autumn lovers are coming out of the woodwork on Instagram and revealing their purchases for the coming months. Over the last few weeks, it’s become clear that there’s one trend, in particular, that is set to dominate the new season: the suede jacket.

Available in a range of different styles and colourways, this outwear trend follows on from the throwback vibes that have proliferated this summer. After all, the suede jacket has had a unique manifestation every decade—from the patchwork styles of the ‘70s to the stripped-back button-downs of the ’90s—and unlike other fabrics, it has the benefit of improving with age.

My personal favourite has to be the Wild West–inspired fringed jacket I’ve spotted on the likes of Monikh and Jen Wonders. And yes, I’ve already bought H&M’s impressive faux-leather style, which I plan to wear with straight-leg jeans and snakeskin boots as soon as the weather permits.

This is also a trend that can easily be bought secondhand, so I’d recommend checking out Oxfam online and Rokit for the real deal at a fraction of the price (I’ve included a few below). Scroll down to see and shop my full suede-jacket edit.
