‘It was just a BLACK CURTAIN!’: Celtics announcer Mike Gorman reveals he suffered a detached retina which forced him to wear an eye patch… despite avoiding surgery in the scary ordeal
Celtics play-by-announcer Mike Gorman has been wearing an eye patch on TV, and revealed a detached retina forced him to use the item.
Gorman said on ‘Toucher & Rich‘ on 98.5 The Sports Hub on Wednesday that he lost most of his sight while eating lunch last week, before walking himself to the hospital.
Days later, he was calling a Celtics game in an eye patch.
‘I had to be operated on within 48 hours, or I could’ve lost my eyesight forever,’ he said, as noted by Barrett Sports Media.
‘Each morning I wake up, it’s a little better.
‘I wouldn’t be able to pick you guys out of a crowd because everything is all colors.’

‘But there weren’t colors before. It was just a black curtain.’
Gorman, the longtime voice of the Celtics, said doctors predicted it would take ‘two or three’ months before his vision returns.
It’s not the first time a medical emergency has occurred to a Celtics TV voice.
The announcer, who also used to be the voice of the Big East, sadly saw his longtime on-air partner Tommy Heinshon pass away from kidney failure in 2020.
On the court, Boston were knocked out of the East’s No. 1 seed on Monday after losing to the Knicks.
