It Bag Alert: Bottega Veneta’s Sardine Bag Is Becoming a Celebrity Go-To
All eyes were on the accessories at Matthieu Blazy’s first autumn/winter 2022 show for Bottega Veneta. The Parisian designer introduced a fresh range of bags realized in the house’s signature intrecciato weave, including puffy clutches, gargantuan totes, and bucket bags that were carried with knotted ropes in place of a conventional handle. But Blazy’s hero bag shape was the Sardine, a supple pouch that gets its name from the metallic fish-shaped handle.
The slouchy silhouette riffs on the brand’s Jodie bag—which was released by Blazy’s predecessor, Daniel Lee – and is unique for its simple design. Crafted from rigid woven leather, it boasts a single pouch with no inner pockets and a magnetic closure, making it an understated option for any accessories fanatic. For autumn/winter 2022, Blazy unveiled three colorways—“bitter chocolate,” “barolo” and “chalk”—and added black, taupe, and lemon yellow to the line-up for spring/summer 2023.
The brand says the Sardine “doubles [up] as a jewel”— a fact that Rosie Huntington-Whiteley can vouch for. The supermodel was a staunch supporter of Lee’s cult accessories (namely, his Pouch bags), and she’s been just as enthusiastic about Blazy’s offering. As a minimalist obsessive, she’s invested in the “chalk” iteration of the Sardine, as well as the designer’s studded take on the Cassette bag.
Kendall Jenner, meanwhile, has fallen for the delicious “bitter chocolate” colorway—with that name, who can blame her?—which she carried at the US Open last month. Dressed in a silky yellow dress, a navy jumper, and teardrop earrings (look 47 from Matthieu Blazy’s debut collection), Jenner attended the event with the Sardine in tow, packed lightly to ensure it retained its soft crescent shape.
The Sardine is surprisingly roomy. Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Vogue India’s September 2022 cover star, keeps two hairbrushes, glasses, sunglasses, a fan, and make-up (amongst other things) in her Sardine bag, as she revealed in her In The Bag interview.
If you’re after an investment with a difference—and an accessory that will stand the test of time—the Sardine bag is for you. Be quick! It’s selling like hotcakes.
