HIGHLIGHTS

  • Deepak Chahar sold for Rs 14 crore to Chennai Super Kings
  • CSK had retained MS Dhoni for Rs 12 crore for IPL 2022
  • Ishan Kishan, sold for Rs 15.25 crore, became the 2nd most expensive MI player for IPL 2022

Two of the most successful Indian Premier League franchises, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings broke their bank to bring back two of their trusted stars in Ishan Kishan and Deepak Chahar at the IPL 2022 mega auction on Saturday in Bengaluru.

With the 8 teams who were part of the last season allowed only 4 retentions and new teams allowed 3 draft picks, Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings were forced to leave out some of their star names from the retention list.
While their focus had always been having a reliable and familiar core, it was no surprise that Mumbai and Chennai went for their former players at the mega auction.

IPL 2022 Mega Auction: Live Updates

Chennai Super Kings went into a bidding battle for their new-ball bowler Deepak Chahar. After being pushed to the limits by Rajasthan Royals, CSK eventually bought the pacer for a whopping Rs 14 crore.

Notably, CSK have paid Rs 2 crore more for Deepak Chahar than they paid for MS Dhoni to retain their 4-time title-winning captain. Dhoni was retained for Rs 12 crore while CSK paid Ravindra Jadeja Rs 16 crore to pick him as their first retention choice.

Notably, CSK did not enter the race until the bidding went past Rs 10 crore. While Delhi Capitals and SunRisers Hyderabad were in race for the pacer, CSK made their first bid at Rs 11 crore before snapping up the player.

MUMBAI BREAK THE BANK FOR ISHAN KISHAN

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians broke their bank to secure the services of Ishan Kishan. They paid him a whopping Rs 15.25 crore, making him the 2nd most expensive Mumbai Indians player this year.

Mumbai Indians retained their captain Rohit Sharma for Rs 16 crore while they paid Rs 12 crore for Jasprit Bumrah and Rs 8 crore for Suyrakumr Yadav and Rs 6 crore for Kieron Pollard.

Ishan also became the 2nd most expensive player from India bought at an IPL auction after Yuvraj Singh got Rs 16 crore from Delhi Capitals in 2015.
