It’s a very rare occasion when Delhi Capitals (DC) start favourites ahead of a game against the champion side Chennai Super Kings (CSK) but that has been their form and solidity this year. Having beaten them twice already in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the table-toppers, Delhi will be confident going into Qualifier 1.
Chennai Super Kings, on the other hand, looked the champion side they are in the first 11 games winning nine out of those, however, they just have had a slump in the form losing their last three games. But, this team has experience of playing the big games and winning those moments when the pressure gets to you.
The resurgent Delhi side has won four out of the last five games between the two sides, the only game CSK won in the last five encounters against Delhi was Qualifier 2 of IPL 2019, which is why Delhi would want to avenge the loss in the playoffs two years ago against the MS Dhoni-led side.
Head-to-head: 23 games, CSK – 15, DC – 10
The Chennai Super Kings and the Delhi Capitals have faced each other 25 times in the 11 seasons of the IPL (CSK were suspended for two seasons in 2016, 2017) since 2008 and the men in yellow have had the upper hand with 15 wins, while DC have won only 10 out of those 23 encounters.
The Capitals won both the games in the league stage this season. In the first meeting, Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw stitched a 138-run opening stand and blew away CSK chasing 190 runs in Mumbai and in the second game, Delhi bowlers came to the party in Dubai restricting CSK to a low total and chasing despite having a middle-order collapse on a slow surface.
MS Dhoni leads the most runs list
CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the leading run-getter in the DC vs CSK games, scoring 565 runs. Suresh Raina, another one of the most consistent players for CSK is second on the list with 552 runs against the Delhi side, while Shikhar Dhawan is third on the list with 387 runs against CSK.
Ravichandran Ashwin the leading wicket-taker
Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has played for Chennai Super Kings from 2008 to 2015 is the leading wicket-taker in the CSK vs DC games, who is now plying his trade for the Delhi Capitals. Ashwin leads the list with 18 wickets, followed by Dwayne Bravo with 16 wickets.
