iphone: Apple may have plans for an iPhone without a SIM card slot – Times of India
Apple could launch a physical SIM-free iPhone with its iPhone 15 series, suggests a report by BlogDoiPhone. Since iPhone 13 is the latest in the series, the iPhone 15 is expected to arrive in 2023.
As per the report, iPhone 15 could become the first iPhone model to ship without a physical SIM card slot. The rumour is reportedly based on “internal sources” and should be taken with a pinch of salt.
The report says (translated): “Apple has long been experimenting with ways to no longer need the SIM card (known in Brazil as the “carrier chip“), implementing eSIM technology. But according to internal sources of the iPhone Blog, from 2023 the Pro version of the iPhone may already start coming without any input to the physical SIM, working only with 2 eSIM slots. The iPhone and iPad have both been transitioning towards eSIM technology for the past several years. In fact, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro are the first iPhone models to feature support for dual eSIMs, allowing you to use two eSIMs simultaneously.”
If Apple is really going for a SIM-free iPhone and plans to introduce the design in iPhone 15, it should be expected that the iPhone 15 may not arrive in all the international markets where the tech giant usually ships the iPhones because eSIMs adoption might be not as easy in several countries. There also have been rumours about Apple working on a port-less iPhone, which would remove the need for a Lightning connector. For 2015, it looks too good to be true but it should be interesting to see the new design changes if and when they arrive.
