IPFT, BJP’s main ally in Tripura, stares at a split

BJP’s ally in Tripura government Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) is staring at a split.

On Thursday senior leader and Revenue Minister N C Debbarma was formally elected president of the party this has prompted president of the party and Tribal Welfare Minister Mevar Kr Jamatia threatening to move court challenging the election of Debbarma and his committee.

Jamatia told media persons in the Tripura vested group is behind this incident and they want to disestablish IPFT for their personal interest. “This not acceptable to the party workers. Debbarma is an octogenarian and senior most leader of the party and such activity by him is unacceptable and unfortunate”.

He added that on April 3 this year elections were for different posts and Debbarma had lost. The new committee was constituted. “In violation of party’s laws, Debbarma held an interim conference and established himself as President. For the last 14 years the party has been functioning with discipline. I will raise the issue before our advisory board and other senior leaders.”

He refuted that he is making an attempt to merge the party with regional party headed by royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarman’s party TIPRA Motha.

Tripura is going to assembly polls in 2023.
