Inter Miami ‘are closing in on signing Luis Suarez’ with the MLS team ‘believing a deal will be struck shortly’ for Lionel Messi’s ex-Barcelona strike partner to join

Inter Miami are in advanced talks to sign Luis Suarez in what would be another stunning signing.

Suarez played alongside Lionel Messi at Barcelona and their families were very close. They won the Champions League together – forming an iconic strike partnership alongside Brazil forward Neymar.

Gaston Edul, who reports TyC Sports in Argentina, said that Suarez and Miami have been negotiating for months and progress has been made.

Miami co-owner Jorge Mas had previously promised to bring ‘three or four’ more players of Messi’s caliber to Inter Miami. 

Suarez, 36, was recently playing for Brazilian team Gremio but enjoyed a glittering career in Europe. Before Barcelona, he had three electrifying seasons with Liverpool and also played for Ajax and Atletico Madrid. 

But it was playing alongside Messi that he had the finest years of his career. As well as Champions League glory in 2015, they won four Spanish league titles, four Spanish Cups, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

Suarez was recently reported as saying that a move to Miami is ‘impossible’ due to his contract at Gremio.

‘This is false, it is impossible,’ Suarez told Uruguayan newspaper El Observador. ‘I am very happy at Gremio and I have a contract until 2024.’ 

But it now appears that the situation could have advanced.

There were also fears just last month that Suarez could be forced into retirement as he struggled with knee pain.

It is serious. Suarez has the possibility of being fitted with a prosthesis,’ Gremio president Alberto Guerra said.

‘He’s had a lot of injections, a lot of medication, he’s reaching the limit, when is the limit? We don’t know.’ 

Sergio Busquets has also followed Messi to Miami and another former Barcelona player, the defender Jordi Alba, is expected to complete a move soon as well.
