Inside Kacey Musgraves’s Equestrian-Inspired Glam Session for the Met Gala 2021

“I’m a horse girl from Texas,” said Kacey Musgraves on last night’s Met Gala red carpet. Channeling this proclamation into her look for the evening, the country star wore, as she put it, a “gala-meets-equestrian-sport” look from all-American designer Ralph Lauren featuring a slim black mock neck top, belted metallic silver slit skirt, and leather riding boots. “Kacey is an equestrian so it felt like a natural fit,” explained her stylist Erica Cloud. “For the drama, we did a silver lamé skirt that looked like liquid when she moved and is a classic Ralph Lauren silhouette.” Of course, her beauty look needed to finish the equine equation, and so Musgraves looked to makeup artist Moani Lee and hairstylist Giovanni Delgado for the ideal details.

“When thinking of Ralph Lauren, an iconically American brand, I think of the effortless elegance that is the brand’s DNA,” explained Delgado. “[In] speaking to Kacey about our goal for hair, we talked about equestrianism and also about the beautiful ‘ripples’ in her skirt—which ultimately inspired our hair texture for the evening.” To complement her silky, waist-skimming deep brunette waves and further the equestrian story, Lee gave Musgraves a soft, earthy brown smoky eye using the Pat McGrath Labs Mothership IX: Huetopian Dream palette shades Secret Eden and Xtreme Plum Noir, adding a hint of sparkle with a few taps of golden flecked highlighter. Sculpted sweeps of Skin Fetish: Divine Blush in soft beige pink Fleurtatious and a lip liner-traced pout topped off with the ultimate ’90s nude, MatteTrance Lipstick in 1995, finished the look. “We leaned into the classic simplicity of the heritage that is Ralph Lauren by keeping the skin clean and embracing a sun kissed glow with an all over warmth,” explains Lee.

Here, an inside peek at Musgraves’s getting-ready session featuring full glam and a special bottle of Moët & Chandon just waiting to be popped in celebration.
