New Delhi: As many as 1.2 million tickets have been sold for the Commonwealth Games beginning in Birmingham on July 28, the organisers have said, adding that the women’s cricket match between India and Pakistan has “really caught the interest” of the local public. Women’s cricket is making its debut at the Commonwealth Games, and India and Pakistan will be clashing on July 31. “India are in the same group as Pakistan so that has really caught the interest here in Birmingham,” Birimgham Games CEO Ian Reid said. “We have sold 1.2 million tickets for the event. We expect that number to go up as we get closer to the Games,” Reid added. PTI
Jr lifter Harshada clinches gold at Asian C’ships
New Delhi: Harshada Garud won the women’s 45kg gold medal at the Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The 18-year-old finished with an aggregate of 157kg (69kg+88kg) on Monday. She had lifted 153kg (70kg+83kg) to win the Junior World Championships gold in May. Soumya Dalvi bagged the bronze medal in the 45kg youth event. The Youth World Championships bronze medallist lifted 145kg (63kg+82kg) to make the podium. In the men’s 49kg youth event, L Dhanush won bronze in the snatch section with an 85kg effort. However, the Indian finished fourth overall with a total effort of 185kg (85kg+100kg). PTI
