India’s R&D spending share should increase, says Kris Gopalakrishnan

The share of spending on research and development as a percentage of GDP should increase with private companies and institutions stepping up their contribution, said co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan.

“We need to invest more money in research. Research spending should hit 3% of (India’s) GDP from 0.7% currently. Of this private contribution should jump at least 1.5% from 0.1% at present. Bengaluru can play a major role in making this happen,” said Gopalakrishnan, who is also the president of Infosys Science Foundation.

The city should capitalize on the “congregation” of the startup ecosystem, institutions like IISc, IIM and also global research and capability centres and IT companies to collaborate in science research while speaking at the inauguration of the foundation’s new facility in Bengaluru.

“I hope this modern building is a of openness to new ideas, curiosity, critical thinking, healthy skepticism and agree upon disagreements for young minds and help them to become good researchers. We felt such an office is important for the foundation to strengthen its identity and scale up its operations,” said NR Narayana Murthy, founder of the IT giant Infosys in a virtual address.

The foundation opened a new centre for the foundation’s researchers and professionals. It also houses a 100-seater auditorium for conducting science-related events for students and teachers in the city. The foundation also plans to bring Infosys Prize laureates and other personalities in science and arts to deliver lectures.

The Bengaluru-based company’s co-founders Nandan Nilekani, K. Dinesh, SD Shibulal and former director TV Mohandas Pai were present physically at the event.
