India scripts history at Commonwealth Games as Women’s team secures first ever Gold medal in Lawn Bowls

In the Commonwealth Games, in a major first for India, the women’s fours lawn bowls team of Nayanmoni Saikia, Pinki, Lovely Choubey and Rupa Rani Tirkey, scripted history as they won a gold medal by defeating South Africa 17-10 in the finals. This is India’s first medal in the sport.

Lawn Bowls Association President Madhukant Pathak expressed his happiness over the first ever win in the Lawn Bowl sport.

The Men’s Table Tennis team defeated Singapore 3-1 in the gold medal match to give the country its fifth gold medal.

Weightlifter Vikas Thakur won the silver medal in men’s 96-kilogram category. Thakur lifted a total weight of 346 kilograms.

In Athletics, Murali Sreeshankar and Muhammed Anees Yahiya have qualified for the men’s long jump final.

Star shot-putter Manpreet Kaur has qualified for the final too. Swimmers Kushagra Rawat and Advait Page qualify for men’s 1500 meter freestyle final.

India lost to Malaysia in the mixed badminton team final, which saw them settle for a silver medal. PV Sindhu had earlier won the second match of the mixed team badminton final against Malaysia after the men’s doubles pair of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy lost the opening game of the gold medal match. The women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also lost their match.  

Meanwhile, Seema Punia and Navjeet Kaur Dhillon are in action in the women’s discus throw final.

President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have congratulated the winners.

India have so far have won 13 medals with five gold, five silver and three bronze.
