India raises Afghan heroin route via Iran ports in talks

India and Iran held a three-day discussion on the influx of drugs, especially Afghan heroin, from Chabahar and Bandar Abbas Ports in Iran. The meeting took place in Tehran between India’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and Iran’s Anti-Narcotics Police, headed by Brigadier General Majid Karimi. The Indian delegation was headed by DG NCB, Satya Narayan Pradhan with officials from the Union home and external affairs ministry.

This was the first physical meeting between the two nations after Covid-19 travel restrictions were lifted. Last year, the two sides held a virtual summit during which it was agreed to share intelligence to address the issue of trafficking of drugs through maritime routes. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on drug-related matters and for security cooperation already exists between the two countries. Law enforcement agencies in India however are concerned about the spurt in smuggling of Afghan heroin, especially after the Taliban’s takeover.

During the three-day session, New Delhi sought Tehran’s assistance in developing real time intelligence sharing on Afghan heroin, drugs being shipped from its ports in Chabahar and Bandar Abbas and the growing problems due to sharing of borders with Afghanistan-Pakistan.

Officials told ET that the Iranian authorities reiterated their demands for consular access of its nationals arrested in India by various drug and law enforcement agencies.
