India is the fourth most spammed country in the world – Times of India
It’s a daily occurrence when you receive either a spam call or a text. It could be a telemarketing call or someone trying to sell you insurance, credit card and whatnot. Messages from unknown callers are a routine part of the daily smartphone experience. A report by Truecaller has now confirmed that India is amongst one of the worst to be affected by spam calls and messages.
In a report released by the company, India ranks at number four on the list of top countries affected by spam calls in 2021. It’s no surprise to see that the vast majority — 93.5% — of all spam in India were sales or telemarketing calls. The report also reveals that over 202 million spam calls were made by just one spammer in India this year. If you break it down then it is 6,64,000 calls every day and 27,000 calls every hour of every day.
The report by Truecaller also reveals that the average number of spam calls per user per month stands at 16.8. The total spam volumes received by Truecaller users alone are in excess of 3.8 billion calls in the month of October.
Brazil ranks number one on the list of the most spammed country in the world (four years in a row) with 32.9 spam calls per user per month. There is a significant gap between the average number of spam calls received in Brazil (32.9 calls per user per month) versus Peru (18.02 calls per user per month), which stands in the second position.
It’s not just about spam but also scams as the report sheds light on that as well. One of the most common scams in the country remains the ever-popular KYC (know your customer) scam where fraudsters pretend to be a bank, wallet or digital payment service, asking for user KYC documents as mandated by the Reserve Bank of India.
