In UCC debates, Kerala CM sees ‘electoral’ ploy to ‘deepen communal divide’

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed strong opposition against the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the talks around which have erupted since Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong push for it during his rally in Bhopal. Pinarayi Vijayan has alleged an “electoral ploy by the Sangh Parivar” was behind raking up the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) debates and urged that any such attempt that “undermines India’s pluralism”.

Pinarayi Vijayan said the Centre’s move can only be seen as a plan to implement the “majority communal agenda of ‘one nation, one culture’ by wiping out the cultural diversity of the country”. “The Central government and the Law Commission should withdraw from the move to impose the Uniform Civil Code,” the Kerala chief minister said.

“Triggering debates around Uniform Civil Code is an electoral ploy by Sangh Parivar to press their majoritarian agenda for deepening communal divide. Let’s oppose any attempts to undermine India’s pluralism and support reforms through democratic discussions within communities,” Pinarayi Vijayan tweeted.

Meanwhile, amid a raging debate over its implementation, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced on Friday that the state will soon implement the UCC as Congress leader Meem Afzal called it “DCC–Dividing Civil Code”.

“As per the promise made to the people of the state, today on June 30, the committee formed to prepare the draft of the Uniform Civil Code has completed its work. Soon #UniformCivilCode will be implemented in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand. Jai Hind, Jai Uttarakhand!” Dhami tweeted.

Meanwhile, Meem Afzal said, “This is not UCC, this is DCC-Dividing Civil Code. UCC is not the agenda, rather the agenda is to divide the people of the country.”

Samajwadi Party national general secretary Shivpal Singh Yadav also slammed the Central government for its push to implement the UCC ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election. “Whenever there are elections, these people indulge in this kind of propaganda. They don’t have to do anything nor will they be able to do anything. They will continue to indulge in this kind of talk before elections.”
