In Brooklyn, Loewe and Creative Time Celebrated Artist Charles Gaines

After a three-year halt, Creative Time gathered in Brooklyn, New York, to celebrate the return of their annual gala this year celebrating artist Charles Gaines. Creative Time has a history of commitment to ambitious projects spanning the country. Their dedication to storytelling through public art displays is no small effort, and Gaines’s latest work is proof.

Held at Powerhouse Arts, the space was low-lit in red lights resembling a lounge-like atmosphere. In partnership with Loewe Foundation, Creative Time designed a room fit for a celebration as many attendees floated through the rooms wearing pieces from the highly coveted Spanish labels. Among the night’s guests were Kimberly Drew, Nicholas Braun, Kennedy Yanko, Victor Glemaud, Waris Ahluwalia, and Aquaria. The warehouse was expansive, but guests still managed to fill the room with tremendous style.

This summer, Creative Time and Gaines unveiled Moving Chains as a part of The American Manifest works of Gaines. The 110-foot sculpture depicts a chilling reflection of slavery as it pertains to American history, marking the artist’s first public showcase. The interactive piece, which features nine revolving chains which move overhead spectators who walk beneath it, is a reflection of Creative Time’s commitment to the work of artists like Gaines. Together, what was accomplished was a masterful work in public that Gaines would later describe as “an oasis of the imagination.”

Moving Chains is on display on Governor’s Island in New York until June 2023.
