In a New Trunk Show, Moda Operandi x the Fifteen Percent Pledge Spotlights 8 Black Designers
As for future trunk shows or like projects, the designer and founder is keeping her mind open. “Whether it’s another trunk show, an incubator program or a community event—our partners understand that the work to support Black entrepreneurs requires more than just securing shelf space. It takes a village, and we’re excited for future opportunities with our partners to expand our work together.”

Head of State
Taofeek Abijako, the Nigerian-born, Brooklyn-based designer and founder behind Head of State, first established his brand in 2016. Inspired by elevated streetwear, Abijako explores post-colonial youth culture through his clothing. In his latest collection, the designer pays homage to his two homes, Nigeria and New York by reinventing traditional West African silhouettes.
Sukeina
The brainchild of Omar Salam, CFDA member and 2022 Vogue Fashion Fund finalist, Sukeina’s collection of occasion wear references from Africa, Europe, and America. The brand, which is committed to innovation, quality craftsmanship, and sustainable production, puts forth apparel that is equally celebratory (think cocktail and shift dresses with a twist) and thought-provoking.
AnOnlyChild
Maxwell Osborne, who previously founded Public School, established AnOnlyChild in 2020. Made entirely from deadstock materials, his latest collection is inspired by his Jamaican heritage, NYC upbringing, and childlike creativity. Each piece puts a modern spin on traditional workwear by way of unexpected silhouettes and prints.
Dur Doux
Perhaps the most heartwarming aspect of the brand Dur Doux is that it was founded in 2015 by a mother-daughter duo, Najla and Cynthia Burt. The collection, which is a window into the designers’ upbringing in Florida, offers sleek silhouettes in tropical and floral patterns. Designed to be mixed and matched, each of Dur Doux’s pieces is a celebration of femininity, opulence, and pure fun.
Agbobly
Taking a joyous approach to fashion, the 2022 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist’s collection reinvents the traditional school uniform by way of gingham prints, sweater vests, and embellished denim. The designer, Jacques Agbobly, drew upon the vibrant colors of his youth to create a collection that evokes nostalgia and child-like freedom.
Harwell Godfrey
Inspired by Art Deco jewelry and ancient textiles from the African Diaspora, the San Francisco-based designer Harwell Godfrey handcrafts her 18K gold designs to create pendants, earrings, and necklaces. Formerly an art director, the designer brings ethical and semi-precious stones into her works for their energy-healing qualities.
Brother Vellies
Working with artisans across Africa, Italy, Indonesia, and Mexico with the intention of preserving heritage craft, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner Aurora James creates playful shoes that simultaneously celebrate cultural histories and timeless designs. Founded in 2013, Brother Vellies’ footwear is crafted from eco-conscious chrome-free leather and animal by-product hides, ensuring the production process minimizes environmental impact.
Sunni Sunni
Founded by self-taught footwear designer Sunni Dixon in 2020, Sunni Sunni showcases artful shoes (including boots meant for year-round wear) that are designed with city dressing in mind. The trunk show’s featured collection includes the brand’s cult-favorite square-toe Reese boots and denim sandals, which are inspired by the way oversized jeans can cover one’s entire foot.
