Imtiaz Ali and AR Rahman, known for their previous collaborations on films like ‘Rockstar’ and ‘Tamasha’, are joining forces once again to bring us another musical experience. This time, they are delving into the extraordinary life of Amar Singh Chamkila, Punjab’s original rockstar of the masses. Despite more than eight years since its release, the music of ‘Tamasha’ still resonates in listeners’ minds, leaving a lasting impression. Now, the talented duo is set to create magic once more with the compelling tale of Chamkila.
Diljit Dosanjh takes on the role of Amar Singh Chamkila, a man who rose from the depths of poverty to become a legendary figure in the 80s, captivating audiences with his powerful music. However, his provocative songs, which challenged societal norms, garnered him both fervent admirers and fierce critics. Tragically, Chamkila’s life was cut short when he was assassinated at the young age of 27. Despite his untimely demise, he remains the highest record-selling artist of his time and is hailed as one of Punjab’s greatest live-stage performers.
In the film, Diljit Dosanjh is paired opposite Parineeti Chopra, who also lends her vocals to some of the songs. In a statement issued to the media, director Imtiaz Ali expresses his excitement about bringing Amar Singh Chamkila’s story to the screen, saying, “Creating ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ and depicting the life of this iconic music star of the masses has been a unique journey for me. The film explores the frenzied popularity of Chamkila’s audacious songs that society couldn’t ignore or swallow.”
Diljit Dosanjh shares his thoughts on portraying Chamkila, calling it one of the most challenging experiences of his life. He expresses gratitude for the opportunity to sing Rahman sir’s exceptional compositions, describing it as a meditative experience. Diljit adds, “I hope I have done justice to his (Rahman’s) vision. Thank you, Imtiaz, for believing in me for this role.”
The teaser of the film, released on Tuesday and it offered a glimpse of Diljit Dosanjh without his turban, stirring an interest among the audience. The film is scheduled for release in 2024. Earlier, there were legal complications surrounding the rights of the film, leading to a stay on its release. However, a few days ago, a court in Ludhiana lifted the stay, allowing the film to proceed as planned.
