IMD says severe heatwave will abate from 23 May, predicts relief for India
The Indian Metrological Department said that heatwaves conditions are likely to abate from tomorrow, 23 May, in most parts of India. Only the state of Jharkhand will still be under alert for severe heatwave conditions on 23 May.
The IMD also noted that on Monday, 22 May, heatwave alert has been issued for south Haryana, Delhi, south Uttar Pradesh, north Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, and West Bengal.
IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy told ANI, “We have issued heatwave alert for today for south Haryana, Delhi, south UP, north MP, Jharkhand, Bihar and Bengal. Tomorrow, heatwave alert is not given for any place other than Jharkhand”.
“Yes, there is a strong possibility that is likely,” she added when asked if there will be relief from heatwave from tomorrow.
The weather department also informed that heatwaves were observed in parts of South Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, North East Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
In the past twenty four hours extremely heavy rainfall was observed in South interior Karnataka. Bengaluru was lashed with heavy rainfall and hailstorm, which led to the death of a 22-year old Infosys techie.
The IMD noted that hailstorm was reported from West Madhya Pradesh, South Interior Karnataka and Telangana.
IMD Heatwave warning
-Maximum temperatures are very likely to rise by 2-3°C over Northwest India during next 3 days and fall by 3-5°C thereafter
-Heat wave conditions very likely to prevail over south Haryana, southern parts of Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal on 21 and 22 May
-IMD noted similar condition will prevail over Jharkhand on 22 May.
-Due to humid air and high temperature, Hot and Discomfort weather is very likely over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Rayalaseema, Kerala, and Mahe on 21 May.
Delhi Weather Update
Heatwave conditions will prevail in the national capital on Monday with the maximum temperature likely to settle around 43 degrees Celsius, the Met Office said.
The weather office has forecast a partly cloudy sky during the day with strong surface winds.
