IMD issues heatwave alert for certain states, others likely to see excess rain
The India Meteorological Department said heatwave conditions would prevail over certain parts of the country this week. The development came even as southwest monsoon set in over Kerala on Thursday – following the longest delay in seven years – and the western coast braced for a cyclone.
According to the IMD, Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to prevail over Bihar between June 8 and 12 and over gangetic West Bengal and Jharkhand from June 8 to 11. Heatwave conditions are also likely to prevail over Odisha the the sub-Himalayan West Bengal region during June 8-10, over Telangana on June 8,9 and over parts of Uttar Pradesh till June 11.
“In North-West India, temperature likely to rise, temperatures can go up to 40-42°C but there won’t be any heat wave scenario for next four to five days. Heat wave conditions prevailing in East India, adjoining North-West India, East UP,” said IMD scientist Naresh Kumar.
But even as eastern India reels under extreme heat conditions, other parts of India have seen hailstorms and excessive rain. The IMD warned on Thursday afternoon that hailstorms could occur in isolated places in Uttarakhand on June 11 and 12.
Meteorologists attributed the excess rainfall and below-normal temperatures this pre-monsoon season (March to May) to higher-than-usual western disturbances — weather systems that originate in the Mediterranean region and bring unseasonal rainfall to northwest India.
Meanwhile the western coast of India is slated to receive heavy rainfall over the weekend as Cyclone Biparjoy gains momentum. Meteorologists had earlier said that the storm was impacting the intensity of the monsoon and that its onset over Kerala would be “mild”.
