IMD alert: Heatwave, very heavy rainfall predicted till 15 May. Full forecast

The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) on Friday noted that heatwaves are set to increase in several parts of India over the next three days. The weather department noted that heat wave conditions will prevail over West Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra on 12 and 13 May, and over East India from 15 May.

The IMD further said that Cyclone Mocha has intensified into very severe cyclonic storm at 5.30 am on Friday. 

IMD forecast for India

Northeast India:

-Rainfall very likely over Northeast India  from 13 May to 16 May.

-Heavy rainfall very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya between 14-16 May, over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from 13-16 May.

-Very heavy falls also likely over Arunachal Pradesh on 15 May, over Assam and Meghalaya on 15 and 16 May, and over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on 14 and 15 May.

No significant weather change is likely over rest parts of the country.

IMD issues Heatwave warning

Heat wave conditions very likely to occur over

-Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra on 12 May

– Gujarat and West Rajasthan on 12 and 13 May

-West Madhya Pradesh during 12-14 May

-Vidarbha on 13 and 14 May

-Bihar, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal on 15 and16 May

-Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from 14-16 May

The IMD mentioned that due to humid air and high temperature, hot and discomfort weather is very likely over Konkan during next 2 days; over Odisha during next 5 days; Kerala and Tamil Nadu on 13 and 14 May

IMD issues Orange and yellow alert 

The weather department issued yellow and orange alert for severe heatwave conditions over Saurashtra and Kutch till 13 May. 

Further Orange alert was also issued for south Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura for very heavy rainfall from 14-16 May. 

Cyclone Mocha: Rainfall warning

Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Heavy rainfall is likely to occur over the area on 12 May.

-Tripura and Mizoram: Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur on 13 May and very heavy rainfall will occur on 14 May.

Nagaland, Manipur and south Assam: Heavy rainfall is likely to occur on 14 May.

Cyclone Mocha: Pathway

The very severe cyclone is likely to cross southeast Bangladesh and north Myanmar coasts between Cox’s Bazar (Bangladesh) and Kyaukpyu (Myanmar), close to Sittwe (Myanmar) around noon of 14 May, 2023.

A Very Severe Cyclonic Storm with maximum sustained wind speed of 150-160 kmph gusting to 175 kmph.
