Iman Shares Her Beauty Secrets—Including Her DIY Face Mask Recipe
“First step is beauty from within,” Iman says in the latest installment of Vogue’s Beauty Secrets. The 66-year old model drinks a turmeric ginger elixir immune booster mixed with her favorite water before moving on to her DIY face mask. “A beauty secret I’ve used since I was 12 years old, it’s from Somalia. We’re taught from a young age that the skin you take care of in your 20s is the one you inherit in your 60s and 70s,” she explains, mixing a concoction of two tablespoons flour, two tablespoons milk, one teaspoon turmeric powder, and a splash of honey. She applies it to her face and leaves it on for 20 minutes, using the time to add 24k gold eye masks by Peter Thomas Roth for intensive hydration.
Moving onto skin care, Iman swears by the SK-II Pitera Facial Essence: “it really just gives you a fresh canvas.” As she applies a Biologique Recherche serum, she recounts her younger days when she wasn’t as diligent about taking her makeup off after long days on set or a night out. “You have to take care of your skin—no matter what age you are. Do not strip the natural oils on your skin. You have to learn what skin care works for you.” The rest of her routine involves 111SKIN’s eye cream and black diamond cream, then a spritz of Dr. Dennis Gross’ vitamin C mist. “Skin care is really an investment in yourself, and you will see the results as the years go by,” she notes before starting her makeup—a regimen that includes products from her own line, started in 1994 specifically for women of color.
“The whole impetus of creating Iman Cosmetics started in 1975, and my first job was for American Vogue. There was a makeup artist on set, and he said, ‘Did you bring your own foundation,’” recalls Iman. She was shocked to see him mixing a brown eyeshadow with moisturizer in an attempt to match her complexion. Now, her collection’s offerings close that gap, like others making strides towards inclusivity. She applies her concealer with a Kevyn Aucoin brush, opting for a darker shade to contour. Next, she takes a tip from the makeup legend before applying powder—take a tissue, split it in half, and blot your face to remove excess oil from the foundation. “I like smokey eyeshadow, and I have found one compact where I actually use all the colors,” she reveals before sweeping a Makeup by Mario palette over her lids, pulling the eye together with Lady Gaga’s Haus Laboratories eyeliner she calls “mistake proof” and blending it with an angled brush to avoid a harsh line. On her lips, she turns to a lip pencil from Iman Cosmetics and the Laneige Sleeping Mask. A spray of her new fragrance Love Memoir, an ode to her husband David Bowie, sets her on her way. “I always say you’re not fully dressed without a perfume.”
