Iga Swiatek first repeat women’s French Open champ since 2007
Iga Swiatek showed why she’s the best player in women’s tennis by defending her 2022 French Open crown on Saturday in a competitive three-set final against Karolina Muchova.
She’s the first player to repeat as French Open champion since Justine Henin won three straight from 2005-07. With the victory, Swiatek remains undefeated in the final round of majors. Her four Grand Slam trophies at the age of 22 put her in great company.
Muchova put up a valiant effort in the tough loss, becoming the only player to win a set against Swiatek during the French Open this year when she won a grueling, 71-minute second-set to extend the match to a decisive third set.
Muchova entered the tournament ranked No. 43 in the world rankings and was attempting to become the third unseeded player since 2017 to win the women’s French Open. She was 5-0 against players ranked in the top 3 prior to Saturday’s final and in a great position to improve to 6-0 against Swiatek.
Muchova was a point away from serving for the match in the third set but Swiatek flipped the script by winning three points in a row to go up 5-4 in the final set. Swiatek won the tournament on a double fault.
Next up for Swiatek and the rest of the tennis world on the Grand Slam docket is Wimbledon from July 3-16. Swiatek hasn’t made it past the fourth round in three career appearances but is at the top of her game as she attempts to extend her dominance from the clay court to grass.
