ICC Women’s World T20: Despite Renuka & Mandhana’s brilliance England beat India by 11 runs
England women beat India women by 11 runs at the ICC Women’s World T20 in Group 2 match on Friday. Chasing a target of 152 runs, India were off to a flyer, thanks to Smriti Mandhana who scored at brisk pace and kept Indian in hunt for long. Mandhana eventually fell for an individual score of 52. Indian keeper Richa Ghosh also played a key innings of 47 not out of just 34 balls but failed to Indian over the line. This is India’s first loss in the tournament after winning the first two matches against Pakistan and West Indies.
Mandhana and Shafali Verma started things brilliantly as the duo added 29 runs for the first wicket before Verma fell on the last ball of the fourth over. Jemimah Rodrigues then joined Smriti and the pair added 28 runs for the second wicket before India’s inning hit breaks as Rodrigues and skipper Kaur fell in quick succession, leaving India three down for 62.
Ghosh and Smriti then took over and took India past 100. With 48 runs needed in last four over and Mandhana back in hut, the onus fell on young Richa Ghosh, who tried her best but couldn’t find needed support at the other end. Indian eventually could score 140 runs in their allocated 20 overs.
Earlier, India won the toss and elected to field first at Gqeberha and Kaur’s decision was proven right in time as pacer Renuka Singh took three wicket to jolt England top order. With three wickets down for 29 before the end of fifth over, English skipper Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt joined forced to rescue them.
The duo added 51 runs for the fourth wicket before Shikha Pandey dismissed Knight for 28. Next batter Amy Jones also played a good hand of 40 runs as England managed to score 151 runs in 20 overs with Brunt scoring 50 before being dismissed by Renuka in the last over.
India’s Renuka Singh also became the first Asian bowler to take a five-for in a World T20 match. Singh bowled a dream spell of 15/5 in her allocated four overs with last two wickets coming on successive balls in the 20th over of England innings.
