Love is a many-splendored thing, especially when you’re gawking at it from the outside. In this column, we’ll be examining the celebrity couples that give us hope for our own romantic futures and trying to learn what we can from their well-documented bonds.
I’m going to say it, because it needs to be said: If I were an extremely attractive, wealthy, internationally beloved celebrity, I would never bother trying to be funny. Why should I? I—like most people—developed my sense of humor as a finely honed defense mechanism early in life, but it always confounds me when noncomedian celebrities (you know, the shiny-haired, white-toothed, box-office–grossing kind) are actually funny. Enter Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, a celebrity couple that lives to burn each other in deeply inventive ways and troll one another into oblivion. Dare I say…goals?
In case you’re not a student of the Lively-Reynolds relationship, let me catch you up: The two met in 2010 while filming Green Lantern, began dating in 2011, and got married in 2012. The Gossip Girl lead and Deadpool star are the parents of three girls—James, Inez, and Betty—and famously friends with Taylor Swift (who named her song “Betty” after their daughter, which is a life milestone arguably equivalent to having a child in the first place).
All these things are perfectly well and good, pretty much what you’d expect from an A-lister marriage, but the true joy of Lively and Reynolds’s relationship (at least as viewed from the outside) is how much fun they seem to have together. Sure, any couple can smile and pose for the camera on the red carpet, but how many celebrity pairs out there are comedically trying to make each other jealous using the likes of John Legend and Helen Mirren as human props? This Instagram photo of a mostly cropped-out Lively, posted by Reynolds on the occasion of Lively’s birthday, is the rarest thing of all to spring from the social media profile of a hot famous person: actually funny.
Lively has proved she can more than hold her own against Reynolds’s wit, posting a picture of fellow heartthrob Ryan Gosling on Reynold’s birthday, and this is precisely what I like about her union with Reynolds. Bachelor-type pranksters like George Clooney are all well and good (yes, I know he’s married, but he will always remain a spiritual bachelor to me), but a couple that viciously comes for each other on social media is so much more rare and precious. Long live their weird, goofy love!
